CAT’s U 8’s

Dear Parents

 The coaches thought it wise to write to you all in plenty of time regarding our planned coaching sessions for the New Year. As you are aware the game we play at U8’s is non contact, the focus being on running and passing the ball. This will change next season when we play the Under 9’s rules where there is full contact tackling but un-contested lineouts and scrums; U9’s & U10’s rules can be downloaded from the RFU website using the link on the MINI / MIDI page. 

 To ensure the children are fully prepared for contact play we shall start practising tackling after Christmas. They will all need to wear a gum shield; these are available as two main types, ‘one size fits all’ from DJ’s or any sports shop which you will need to trim and soften in hot water to get the correct fit or as a much costlier option one from the dentist who will make you a bespoke shield. The other ‘must’ is that they have aluminium or aluminium tipped studs in their boots. BLADES are not allowed.

 We the coaches are all RFU Level 1 trained, we have been taught to coach tackling safely but occasionally head injuries do occur. Whereas the gum shield must be worn we would also recommend that each child wear a skull cap, available from DJ’s and other sports shops, at approx £15. Shoulder pads are available for extra protection should your child require them.

 Future Events

 We want to organise a non-rugby fun event for the team and shall let you know ‘what, when, where’ when we have further information. There are plans to hand out a team news letter on a regular basis, also to post it on the Club website; if anybody wants us to add photo’s or any information then these can be e-mailed to me at gordonhiscock@btconnect.com

 Calling all Mums: - There will be an U8’s vs. Mums match at the end of the season (probably tag but not necessarily!) please let us know if you cannot take part but a note from your Doctor will be required!!
